MELWA Cement invests Rs. 6 Bn in Seeduwa plant

MELWA Cement, the 100% Sri Lankan cement brand of MELWA Conglomerate, has invested Rs. 6 billion to establish a modern cement finished material mixing and packaging facility in Seeduwa.

Construction of the facility has now been completed, with MELWA Cement products expected to enter the market by the end of this year. The company will offer Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC), Portland Slag Cement (PSC) and Portland Limestone Cement (PLC), catering to a wide range of construction requirements and supporting the continued development of Sri Lanka’s construction sector.

“Imported finished materials, including clinker and gypsum, are transported to the MELWA Cement processing facility in enclosed vehicles and transferred through a fully enclosed pneumatic conveying system into separate storage silos,” said Chinthaka Thuduwewatte.

“The materials are then fed into the Cement Mill, where they are finely and homogeneously blended within a fully enclosed circuit. The finished cement is stored in specially designed silos that protect it from dust and moisture.

“We maintain high environmental standards. As a dry manufacturing process, the operation uses neither combustion nor water and generates no wastewater or combustion emissions, supported by a modern bag filtering system,” he said.

The project is expected to create more than 250 direct and indirect employment opportunities for people in the surrounding area.

“With several new development projects in the pipeline, including the MELWA real estate project in Colombo Port City, we see strong demand for our products. We also plan to explore export opportunities and expect a return on investment within around five years.”

“Through the MELWA Foundation, the company aims to support the local community through social initiatives focused on health, education and environmental conservation. The project will further create commercial opportunities for local suppliers of goods and transport-related services, while generating increased business opportunities within the construction sector,” said Malith Kannagara.

Established in 2002, MELWA Conglomerate has evolved from a pioneering steel manufacturer into a diversified Sri Lankan business group with interests spanning construction materials, pharmaceuticals, hospitality, tea exports and global trade.

Its businesses include Melwire Rolling (Pvt) Ltd, Melwire Lanka (Pvt) Ltd, Melwire Industries (Pvt) Ltd, Melgyp Industries (Pvt) Ltd, Melwa Hotels & Resorts (Pvt) Ltd, Sands Active (Pvt) Ltd and Uni World Teas (Pvt) Ltd.
